A DAD is hoping to raise funds for the maternity unit where his daughter spent the first few months of her life after being born weighing less than two pounds.

Andrew Stokes’ daughter Grace was born at 26 week in April last year, and weighed just 1lb 11oz.

Born at Liverpool Women’s Hospital, Grace was later transferred to the maternity unit at Warrington Hospital – where she spent the next 12 weeks before being allowed home.

Now aged one, Grace still requires oxygen still requires oxygen equipment to help her breathe and receives ongoing support from Warrington Hospital nurses.

Andrew, from Latchford, is now set to climb the three peaks of Yorkshire in September in order to raise funds for both hospitals.

The accountant said: “As Grace approached her first birthday, I decided it was time for me to get up and do something as my way of saying thanks.

“Without the skill and care of those who supported Grace from birth to the day she came home, our family life would have been very different.

“I felt it was important for me to raise funds as a way of helping others who find themselves in a similar situation and support the hospitals that support our family.

“Without the support of the local community, people may end up losing out on the joy of bringing their child home for the first time.”

Andrew is hoping take on the 38.6km route, which includes a 5,200ft climb, in under 12 hours alongside his sister Hannah and her friend Becky.

The trio tackled Snowdon together three years ago.

Warrington and Halton Hospitals’ Charity is currently holding a campaign to raise £15,000 in order to revamp the Lovely Lane site’s maternity unit.

Fundraising manager Helen Higginson added: “Andrew is a true inspiration and we are very fortunate to have such kind supporters wishing to give thanks to our hospital staff and resources.

“Please support Andrew in his quest to make a difference, and help to provide additional comfort, care and experiences to our future patients.”
