A BIRCHWOOD High School pupil has received a call-up to attend a four-day England football training camp.

Joe O’Shaughnessy, in year 10, currently plays for Burnley FC and is just one of four goalkeepers across the country to be invited to compete for a place in the England U15 squad.

The training camp will take place at St George’s Park at the end of April.

If successful at the camp, Joe, from Woolston, will take part in a tournament in Italy in early June.

Over the course of 10 days, teams from England, Italy, Russia and the USA will compete in the competition.

The 15-year-old is only the second person from his age group to be called up from Burnley FC.

He was delighted when he heard the news and is confident that he will go through to the Italian games.

Joe said: “When I received the news, I was excited that my career path was on course and rather than feeling nervous, I felt excited to take part.”

In preparation for his break, Joe spent every day over the Easter holidays travelling to Burnley to train.

Joe’s call up follows fellow Birchwood High pupil Poppy Lawson’s who represented her country in a series of fixtures against Switzerland in February.

Fourteen-year-old Poppy currently plays centre back for Manchester United and was spotted by undercover England scouts.
