EARLIER this month in Yester Years, we brought you some memories of the old picture houses in Warrington.

And plenty of you have been in touch to add your recollections of others which were not on that last.

Jean Berry was born in Warrington and lived in the town until the late 1960s.

She has fond memories of the cinema on Lovely Lane.

She said: "I really enjoyed looking at the photos and info on the old cinemas.

"I was born in Warrington although I haven't lived there since the late 1960s and remember the first cinema I went to was on Lovely Lane, Sankey Green, to see the film Lady and the Tramp.

"It would of been lovely to have seen a photo of this cinema as I believe my father in his youth used to work there.

"Last time I went down Lovely Lane the old building was still standing although I know it has been closed as a cinema for some years."

Mr Anderson, who used to live on Hazel Street and now lives in Knutsford, also had plenty of happy memories and other cinemas to add to the list.

He said: "Being an old Warringtonian I can add a few more cinemas to the list: The Cameo in Sankey Street, later a telly hire shop, The Grand by the old railway crossings at Bridge Foot opposite the cattle auction yard, finally The Regent in Scotland Road (nicknamed the Blood Tub), it faced the back of Caldwell’s iron mongers.

"The theatre in Rylands Street did show pictures on the very odd occasion.

"At the Star Kinema, very often at half time George Formby would entertain (he was the highest paid entertainer and paid 19 shillings and 6 pence in the pound tax).

Most of the large picture houses had electric organs. We kids would go to Saturday morning pictures and play cowboys and Indians all the way home.

"Happy days."

Do you have any memories of the Lovely Lane cinema in particular?
