EACH week in the Warrington Guardian we take a trip down memory lane to read about the stories that were hitting the headlines in the newspaper in years gone by.
100 years ago:
SEVEN young boys were fined for playing football in the streets.
The magistrates were determined to put a stop to problems caused by the youths after a ball was kicked through the window of Hamilton Street School, which was located off Battersby Lane.
During a hearing at the court, a boy was fined five shillings and six others 20 shillings each for playing the game in the street and causing a disruption.
John Fairclough, teacher at the school, said: “There are recreation grounds all over the town so there is no excuse for boys playing in the street.”
