AN England international cricket player will be swapping his whites for overalls this Sunday to volunteer at Appleton Cricket Club.

Liam Plunkett, who has played 13 test matches, 65 one day internationals and 15 T20 internationals for England, will be working with members, at the Lyons Lane club, as part of the NatWest CricketForce initiative.

The programme is designed to encourage volunteers to help out at their local cricket club and get the ground ready for the forthcoming season.

This year Appleton Cricket Club has been selected as the showcase club for the region – meaning they get extra funding, media attention and help from the England international.

Liam Plunkett will be helping out with projects, such as installing baby-change facilities and creating a new decked area for spectators.

Anthony Hurst, club chairman, said: "We're delighted to be welcoming Liam to Appleton this Sunday.

"We don't have the financial resources of some of our neighbouring clubs but we more than make up for that with the passion and commitment of our members and volunteers.

"We've always prided ourselves on being a friendly place to play cricket. Anyone who wants to come down on Sunday to help out – or even just to find out more about the club would be most welcome."

Appleton has four senior men's cricket sides, two women's sides and a number of junior teams for both boys and girls.
