'IMPOSING' proposals to install floodlights on courts at Stockton Heath Tennis Club have been refused by planning chiefs.

The club, on Delphfields Road, wanted to install floodlights on five existing courts, replace two shale courts with astro turf and put in new fencing.

The development management committee was recommended to approve the application at its meeting on Wednesday – despite 19 letters of objection from residents, as well as 46 signatures on a petition.

Appleton Parish Council objected and raised concerns over light reflecting into the gardens of nearby properties.

It also stated that floodlit courts 'are available in the immediate vicinity' at Bridgewater High School.

Committee member Cllr Peter Carey (LAB – Fairfield and Howley) labelled the proximity of the proposed floodlights and nearby properties as 'too close to comfort'.

And Cllr Judith Wheeler (LD – Appleton) said she sympathised with residents.

She added: "I would not be prepared to have that level of imposition in my back garden.

"I think residents are very fearful because 50 yards away you have tennis courts, on London Road, and it is like the 'Stadium of Light'.

"Seeing those floodlights on London Road puts the fear of god into me that it could be visible from my back garden."

The plans were turned down by the committee.
