AN exhibition will celebrate the history of Warrington’s health services to mark the 70th birthday of the national health service.

Our NHS was first formed on July 5 1948, and to mark the occasion Warrington Museum will host an exhibition to explore how healthcare services have changed in the 70 years since.

The Health Revolution will delve into the histories of Warrington General Hospital, Warrington Infirmary and Winwick Hospital.

Other topics covered ranger from common illnesses people suffered 70 years ago and care provisions to healthcare roles and medical milestones.

In putting the exhibition together, the museum reached out to former NHS staff to share memories of their careers.

Their reminiscences include changes to hospital environments, technology and uniforms.

Items on display at Warrington Museum will include healthcare artefacts, old newspaper clippings and possessions donated by former doctors and nurses.

Meanwhile, first-hand accounts of NHS employees will be displayed on a memories wall which visitors can also contribute to.

Other items featured in the Health Revolution have been loaned from the People’s History Museum in Manchester and National Museums Liverpool.

Hannah White, collections assistant at Warrington Museum, said: “We put out a request for members of the public to share their memories and objects that they might have from their time working in the NHS, and the response has been wonderful.

“It has been particularly fascinating working with a group of ladies who are part of the NHS Retirement Fellowship, as they have worked all over the country in varying roles but still within the NHS.

“The exhibition has allowed us to work closely with Warrington and Halton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Hollins Park Hospital in Winwick, who have provided us with some amazing photographs of Warrington’s healthcare services over the past 70 years.

“It has been a great privilege for me to listen to the stories that people have provided and the commitment of these medical professionals has been incredibly inspiring and humbling.”

The Health Revolution runs at Warrington Museum and Art Gallery from Saturday, March 24, to Saturday, July 7.
