RETIRED NHS workers are celebrating the 40th birthday of their fellowship.

The NHS Retirement Fellowship turns 40 in 2018, the same year that the health service itself marks its 70th birthday.

Warrington's branch of the fellowship was set up in 1981 and now holds monthly meetings as well as activities including theatre visits and walking trips.

Members also knit teddy bear puppets for children attending Warrington Hospital and hold fundraising activities for the Warrington and Halton Hospitals' Charity.

Branch chairman Sheila Craggs, a retired nurse, said: "After a lifetime of work people can find it hard to settle into retirement, feeling lonely and isolated having lost the camaraderie of their workplace friends.

"Joining the NHS Retirement Fellowship helps to bring back that mutual trust, friendships and social interaction between retirees.

"The branch is here for members to feel welcome, enjoy and support each other."
