STEVE Price has his first home win as Warrington Wolves head coach.

The Wire became the first side to defeat Wigan in Super League this year as they backed up last week’s success at Widnes Vikings.

Ryan Atkins' second-half try proved to be the difference in a game in which Wolves led 16-0 going into the final quarter.

Bryson Goodwin kicked The Wire into a 2-0 lead from 30 metres inside two minutes after Tony Clubb took out Tyrone Roberts late.

The bright start continued with the only try of the first half soon to follow.

Wolves got on the outside of Wigan down the right flank through Mitch Brown and then on the next tackle Ryan Atkins’ run caused problems, leading to Ben Currie firing a pass wide for Tom Lineham to go over unopposed.

Goodwin landed a lovely conversion from out wide for 8-0.

All the pressure came from The Wire, forcing drop-outs and benefitting from the penalty count being in their favour.

But Wigan survived each set and steadily grew into the half without really troubling The Wire line.

In the closing moments of the half Atkins was close to a second Wire try but he was unable to keep hold of Ben Murdoch-Masila’s late offload that reached the centre at his boot laces.

Currie’s first-half departure with a knee injury looked concerning but Sita Akauola arrived on the field to get his first minutes in a Wire shirt, producing some powerful runs.

A try chance went begging when Murdoch-Masila got his hand to a kick ahead by Roberts after the scrum-half’s long break which meant Atkins’ pounce did not count.

Goodwin extended the lead to 10-0 in the 48th minute after Sam Tomkins went high on Stefan Ratchford in front of the posts following a long burst by the centre.

Five minutes later another try chance went begging when Kevin Brown dropped the ball as it spilled out of a challenge in the air from a high kick.

The try that Wire threatened finally arrived in the 55th minute through Atkins, when he swooped on the ball palmed backwards by Mitch Brown from Kevin Brown’s Crossfield kick. Goodwin converted for 16-0.

Tries from Liam Marshall and one at the death from Tony Clubb were not enough for Wigan in a decent late rally from the visitors.
