The Museum of Science and Industry is looking to the stars this month with a host of space themed activities. Enjoy intergalactic adventures with Tim Peake’s Soyuz spacecraft and experience astronaut training camps. On top of that visitors can meet robots and debate the role of women in science. Here are some of the highlights:
Tim Peake’s Spacecraft
March 10 to May 13, free
On June 18, 2016, Tim Peake returned to Earth in the Soyuz TMA-19M descent module. Now, thanks to the Science Museum Group’s partnership with Samsung, you can join MOSI for a rare opportunity to get a close look at this historic spacecraft – complete with scorch marks from its re-entry through the atmosphere.
Robots
Until April 15
Tickets £8 for adults, £5 for children
This exhibition explores our obsession with recreating ourselves in mechanical form, and what it means to be a human in a robotic world.
In Conversation: Getting Girls Into Science
March 8, 7.30pm, free
To celebrate women in science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) and to mark both International Women’s Day and British Science Week, a panel of specially selected guests will discuss the opportunities and challenges that women face in those industries.
Our speakers will debate when and why some girls lose interest in STEM subjects, how we can encourage the next female generation to be the STEM leaders of tomorrow, and answer audience questions on the politics of gender.
Tickets are free but must be booked in advance.
She Bangs the Drums
March 8 to 11, 2pm and 7.30pm
Tickets £13 (£7 concessions)
It’s 100 years since the Representation of the People Act (1918) passed into law, bringing with it full voting rights for men, and partial voting rights for women.
As part of this landmark year, this new theatre production delves into Manchester’s rich history – from the Suffragettes to the Chartists.
Expect comedy, plenty of politics and Manc pride, as the award-winning Contact Young Company reflect on history and the possibilities for the future.
Space: Late
March 14, 7pm, free
With pop-up planetariums, astronaut training camps and the chance to view Tim Peake’s Spacecraft, this is one event you don’t want to miss. Starring Dr Suzie Imber, Dallas Campbell...and an inflatable planetarium.
Free places must be booked in advance.
Pi: Platform for Investigation
March 17, 10.30am to 3.30pm, free
Get your hands muddy and find out how salt marshes can help fight climate change with scientists from Manchester Metropolitan University.
Pi: Platform for Investigation, in partnership with Siemens, is a monthly event where families discover cutting edge research that’s happening in the north west.
Experitots
March 23
Once a month MOSI’s science gallery is filled with multisensory activities specifically for children aged between one and four.
Tickets are £5 for one adult and one child and £3 per additional adult and child
Space Descent VR with Tim Peake
Daily, 10.30am to 4pm
