FAMILY

George’s Marvellous Medicine, The Lowry, Salford Quays, until Saturday

Warrington Guardian:

MOST grandmothers are lovely, kind, helpful old women. Not George’s grandmother.

She likes to gobble up slugs and bugs, is always telling George what to do and just might be a witch.

But one day, when his parents leave him alone with her, George takes his chance and sets about creating a new medicine to teach her a lesson and cure her of her cruelty.

Little does he know that his perilous potion will be the start of a rather marvellous adventure.

Following the success of Fantastic Mr Fox, The Twits and The Witches, Curve’s new play with Rose Theatre Kingston promises to be just the right medicine.

As with their previous productions, George’s Marvellous Medicine is based on the Roald Dahl classic, illustrated by Quentin Blake, and is suitable for children aged five and above.

But the show is said to be suitable for Dahl fans of all ages, including mums and dads who may have first read the 1981 book many years ago.

From pigs and chickens to magic potions and milkshake machines, you can also expect a set and props bursting with imagination.

George’s Marvellous Medicine is at The Lowry until Saturday.

COMEDY

Ed Byrne, The Lowry, Salford Quays, Sunday

Warrington Guardian:

ED Byrne’s latest routine, Spoiler Alert, explores the thin line between righteous complaining and brat-like whining and asks are we right to be fed up, or are we spoilt?

So the Irish comedian will be talking about what has changed in terms of expectations of parents and kids over a generation and ridiculous mod cons as well as taking the mickey out of ‘bucket lists’.

Ed cut his teeth on the stand-up circuit after setting up the The Comedy Cellar in Glasgow.

After building up his act and reputation, he was nominated for the Perrier Comedy Award at the 1998 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

The Mock The Week regular has now been on the circuit for more than two decades and has a following all over the world.

More recently Ed filmed Dara and Ed’s BBC2’s Road to Mandalay with his best friend Dara O Briain. It was the follow-up to their Big Adventure show.

MUSICAL

Sunset Boulevard, Liverpool Empire, until Saturday

Warrington Guardian:

BILLY Wilder’s story of romance and obsession and ode to the silver screen began life as a movie in 1950 and became a bit of a cult classic.

Now it is back in the spotlight thanks to Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony Award-winning adaptation.

It is about a silent-screen goddess, Norma Desmond, who has lived in a fantasy world since her career faded.

Impoverished screen writer, Joe Gillis, on the run from debt collectors, stumbles into her reclusive world.

Persuaded to work on Norma’s ‘masterpiece’ – a film script that she believes will put her back in front of the cameras – Joe becomes entrapped in her claustrophobic world until his love for another woman leads him to try to break free, with dramatic consequences.

The production features Ria Jones as Norma, who received standing ovations every night when performing the role at the London Coliseum, and Strictly Come Dancing’s Danny Mac as Joe.
