FINDINGS showing the impact of a project which requires pupils to 'lock up' their mobile phones in pouches for the school day could be analysed by the council.

During Tuesday's protecting the most vulnerable policy committee meeting at the Town Hall, members discussed the 2017-2020 youth service strategy.

Over the next three years, the borough's youth service says it is committed to delivering early help services to the young people 'who need it most'.

It will focus on 'being engaging and accessible, improving relationships and wellbeing, achieving a high-quality service and supporting young people to have a voice'.

But Cllr Stefan Krizanac (LD – Westbrook) raised concerns over youngsters becoming 'isolated' due to the increased use of mobile phones.

And he highlighted a school project in America where students have been required to 'lock up' their phones in pouches for the day.

He said: "One of the things that concerns me is the use of technology and mobile phones and people isolating themselves.

"I don't know whether something like that could be carried out, probably on an experimental basis, to see the effects that it might have in the schools we work with and then to compare the data."

He was informed that the council 'could have a look' at the project 'to see what the findings are'.
