THREE revellers have been jailed after failing to smuggle drugs into last year’s Creamfields festival.

The trio of drug mules join 12 others who were jailed for a combined total of more than 30 years two weeks ago for cocaine, ecstasy and ketamine offences.

John Rigby, from Widnes, is now behind bars after he was sentenced to one year and eight months at Chester Crown Court on Friday for possession with intent to supply.

The court heard how the 26-year-old tried to conceal a tube of Smarties containing drugs inside his body on August 25 at around 2.50pm.

Rigby, who has a police caution from 2010 for possession of cocaine, was stopped and searched by officers who were stationed at the north entrance after he was spotted trying to avoid security.

Police uncovered 47 ecstasy tablets worth £470 – valued at £10 each.

Peter Hussey, prosecuting, said: “The defendant said he was aware of the surrender bins and he had attempted to remove the Smarties tube but couldn’t so he carried on regardless and tried to get in. He expressed remorse for what he has done.”

The court heard how he had agreed to smuggle in the drugs for personal use and for his friends.

Daniel White, from Bootle, was jailed for two years and eight months after he was found with £1,400 worth of class A and B drugs which had been hidden inside a condom.

The 19-year-old, who is of previous good character, was arrested near the entrance of the festival on August 26 at 2.15pm.

Mr Hussey, prosecuting, said: “The security officer asked him if he had any drugs he wanted to surrender and he said no.

“He was searched and drugs were uncovered.

“It was at this stage having being told that he was under arrest that he accepted he had brought drugs in because of a £1,500 drugs debt.”

Mum-of-one Carla Renshall, from Huyton, was jailed for two years after pleading guilty to possession with intent to supply drugs.

The 33-year-old was searched after an officer overheard her saying ‘we did it’ shortly after she entered the festival.

Two wraps of cocaine and 65 MDMA tablets were found concealed within her body and in her top.

Analysis of her mobile phone later uncovered her efforts to try to bulk buy ecstasy tablets.

At the time of her arrest, Renshall had been working two jobs as she was in a ‘dire financial position’ as she tried to support her son and family.

She had started to use drugs to ‘block out the grief’ following the death of a family member.

John Rowan, defending, said: “Creamfields was meant to be a break for her and to take her away from a life where she wasn’t living – just existing.

“She made a disastrous mistake to take up an offer – a mistake she will have to live with for the rest of her life.”
