A PRESSURE group highlighting 'unfair' council tax rises and 'ridiculous spending' by local authorities brought its campaign to Warrington.

Campaigners from the TaxPayers' Alliance spoke to residents and handed out leaflets in the town centre on Tuesday afternoon.

Warrington Borough Council's budget, which includes a 5.98 per cent council tax increase, will be put to the full council for a vote on Monday.

Campaign manager Chloe Westley said the group 'wants to give people the tools to campaign'.

She added: "It is about empowering people to ask the council what they are spending money on.

"People are seeing a decrease in services, so bins are getting collected less frequently and potholes are not getting fixed as quickly, so there are some real problems.

"Obviously, councils cite the lack of Government funding but every day we find new examples of waste and ridiculous spending, poor procurement methods and just little things that councils are doing.

"The poor decisions they make wastes a lot of money and means that residents have to pay more, which is just not fair."
