FANS of the ukulele can indulge their passion for the instrument with a thriving group in Holmes Chapel.

Holmes Chapel Ukulele Group was formed about 18 months ago, and currently boasts 10 members, who play for their own enjoyment.

The group is led by Stuart Gammon, and ukulele fans got together after attending a beginner’s course run by Stuart’s son Chris.

“Most of us had ukuleles before the course, and we meet generally every two weeks, on Friday evenings, at the Holmes Chapel Methodist Church hall in Holmes Chapel, and play the music we like,” said Stuart.

“The next meetings are on March 2 and 16 at 7.30pm, and everyone is welcome, whether they are a beginner or experienced.

“Anyone who has basic ukulele skills, and likes playing the instrument for fun is welcome to join us.”

Members of the group attended an all-day intermediate ukulele skills course run by Chris last month.

The course covered a set of skills which were new to most of those attending.

“New songs were learned, to add to repertoires, included old favourites such as Ain’t She Sweet and Who’s Sorry Now?, as well as more contemporary ones such as Can’t Help Falling In Love, It

Must Be Love, Delilah, I Can See Clearly Now and Make You Feel My Love.

“Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves – and learned a great deal.”
