A FORMER NHS worker who had 10 years of her life taken away by depression has revealed how yoga helped her to battle the condition.

Julie Thompson, from Latchford, had to drop out of university when she was struggling to cope with depression and anxiety.

But now the 37-year-old runs her own yoga and Pilates business.

She said: “I was first diagnosed with clinical depression when I was 19, and it took my 20s away from me because I was on a rollercoaster ride trying to find the right medication and getting the right help.

“Throughout my 20s, I really battled to get myself well and on an even keel.

“At the darkest time, you can’t see a way out - it’s a lonely illness.

“I still have days where I might have a bit of a blip but I’ve managed to turn it around with the correct help - there is light at the end of the tunnel.”

Julie, of Surrey Street, set up JT Health Matters in March 2014 having worked in fitness for the past 20 years.

The former NHS lifestyles advisor added: “I used to read quotes a lot when in the depths of depression, and this one always used to jump out - no matter how you feel, get up, dress up, show up and never give up.

“I want people who are struggling with poor mental health to know that you too can beat it, just like I have.

“Be kind to yourself, take it a day at a time, hang on in there and reach out for support.

“There is a lot of support in the form of counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy, exercise, mindfulness apps, support groups and talking to friends and family.

“It’s been a struggle to get where I am today, but you can get through it.”
