MAYOR of Warrington Cllr Les Morgan has set a world record by visiting 18 schools today, Friday.

Cllr Morgan (LAB – Latchford West) completed the record by popping into 18 sites across the borough throughout the day – a feat which has never been done by a mayor before.

He started at Latchford St James CE Primary School at 9am and finished at St Ann's CE Primary School in Orford at 2.50pm before celebrating at the Town Hall.

He said: "It is all part of our fundraising for the mayor's charities.

"We were looking for things that had never been done by mayors, so we had a look at the Guinness World Records and there was nothing appertaining to mayors, or anything like that.

"So we thought what an opportunity we have here – we can go around as many schools as we can in one day and ask the kids to come in, in their own clothes.

"And at the same time we can fetch a little donation for the mayor's charities."

Cllr Morgan praised volunteers for carrying out a lot of work behind the scenes in recent weeks and he admitted he had 'concerns' over potentially hitting the town's dreaded congestion.

He said: "It was obviously a concern.

"But I have a good driver in the mayor's attendant.

"He did a lot of the logistics for us and mapped out all of the route and times."

The schools he visited were Latchford St James CE Primary School, Alderman Bolton Community Primary School, Broomfields Junior School, Grappenhall Heys Community Primary School, Bradshaw Community Primary School, Cherry Tree Primary School, Ravenbank Community Primary School, Fox Wood School, Christ Church Primary School, Locking Stumps Community Primary School, Newchurch Community Primary School, Culcheth Community Primary School, St Paul of the Cross Catholic Primary School, Barrow Hall Community Primary School, Sankey Valley St James' CE Primary School, Great Sankey Primary School, Penketh South Community Primary School and St Ann's CE Primary School.

Cllr Morgan stopped at each site for around 10 minutes to speak to children about the record attempt and the theme of the day, which was 'care'.
