THE heartbroken family of 'the best dad in the world' who would go out of his way for anyone he knew have paid tribute to him.

Former Mayor of Warrington Roy Humphreys died at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital on Friday night, aged 74.

The popular former Labour councillor was first citizen in 1997-98.

Well-known throughout Longford where he lived, he was hailed as a community champion in the area.

Roy ran Longford Community Centre and, along with his wife Jean, was a huge Warrington Wolves fan.

He was a loving father to Karen, Dawn and Karl and also loved his dog Scamp, who recently passed away.

Karen paid tribute to her dad, on behalf of the family.

She said: "He was the best dad in the world and would always go out of his way for us all, not just his kids but his grandkids, our partners and anyone he knew.

"He would do anything for us and the hole he has left in our hearts will never be replaced."

Council figures have also shared their memories of Roy this week.

Cllr Mike Hannon (LAB – Orford) said: "He wasn't just a work colleague but a true friend and he passionately cared about his Longford community and worked tirelessly for them."

Council chief executive Steven Broomhead described Roy as an 'ardent community warrior' for Longford.

He said: "His passionate support for the Wire and his ability to bring about so much good in the town should never be forgotten."

Council leader Cllr Terry O'Neill added: “I’d describe Roy as a lovable rogue and he was always determined to help people, especially the elderly, who were less fortunate than he was.

“He will be sadly missed by everyone who was fortunate enough to know him.”
