LOOKING through photo albums capturing the life of ‘Stan the Man’, his family had many stories to share about the dancing king who became a Warrington legend.

Stan Knowles, who was the much-loved partying pensioner who became synonymous with Mr Smith’s, died at 1pm on Friday, aged 90, after being rushed to hospital last Wednesday.

Many people will remember the gentleman known as ‘Stan the Man’ for his party-loving ways and signature dance moves at the iconic Mr Smith’s nightclub.

His daughter Barbara Devaney, 54, remembers her dad teaching her ballroom steps as a child – memories that she will always treasure.

“He was a brilliant father,” she said.

“He was great with the grandchildren. He taught them to read and tell the time.”

Stan, who lived in Penketh, was born on September 21, 1927, in Everton.

He joined the Army at 18 where he served for three years as part of his national service.

Stan, who spent 30 years working at the docks in Birkenhead, married his true love Doreen in 1957 after they shared a dance on a night out.

He honed his moves in ballroom sessions and in nightclubs in Liverpool before moving to Warrington 20 years ago.

“He was like a Premier League footballer. His legs were really bad so he would rub liniment on them during the week so he was ready for the weekend – that was his match day,” said his son Clive.

“He used to say on a Monday I feel 101 but on a Friday I feel 19 again.”

But Stan, who has four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, also endured his share of heartache after the tragic death of his first child Stephen at the age of two.

“He had his fair share of tragedy. Stephen was knocked over by a bus outside the house in Liverpool,” said Barbara.

“It wasn’t a busy road but there was diversion and they sent the traffic down there.

“It was the worst time of my dad’s life.”

As tributes continue to pour in, Stan’s family have been overwhelmed by the kind words from those who have met the Warrington legend.

Barbara added: “As you can imagine it has been a very difficult time for us as Stan was such an integral part of our family. He will be truly missed.

“We have been overwhelmed by the wonderful messages on Facebook, by email and text and it really has helped knowing how many people care.”

Stan’s funeral will take place on Wednesday at 10.20am at Walton Lea Crematorium on Chester Road.

Everyone is welcome to attend to celebrate Stan’s life.

Family flowers only.
