CHILDREN at Cobbs Infant School in Appleton have been busy learning about democracy as part of UK Parliament Week.

Youngsters took part in voting exercises, with the Wood Lane site’s library set up as a polling station and the ‘friends of the school’ becoming returning officers.

All of the classes became constituencies in order for the children to learn that the vote is decided by the majority of classes, rather than the majority of votes.

Kids voted on whether to have a star or an angel on the top of the school Christmas tree, with the star winning.

They were also informed that their vote was secret and that they could choose whether or not to share it, as well as why people could not vote twice.

Votes were officially counted and the children were able to see why spoiled ballot papers would not count, along with how the process was finalised.
