THE ‘initial estimate’ of the cost of Chapelford train station was not £13 million (Warrington Guardian, November 9).
A press release issued by Warrington Borough Council dated February 28, 2013 – announcing the scheme – put the estimated cost at £7 million.
The currently projected cost of £19 million is well over two-and-a half times that figure.
Three months later – on May 30, 2013 – a second Warrington Borough Council press release stated the cost was now likely to be £9 million.
And it was this figure that was included in the public consultation document in June 2013 – together with an indication that WBC’s contribution would be limited to £0.5 million.
The value of the response to that consultation must now be highly questionable, given that the cost is more than double, the scheme’s design has been reduced.
And WBC’s contribution is going to be so much greater.
