A DEDICATED fundraiser has taken on her own DIY SOS challenge to help the Y Project night shelter.

Amy Crank is working to upgrade the kitchen at the Room at the Inn, where volunteers currently serve up to 100 meals a day prepared on worktops made from wardrobe doors.

And Amy said the room has not got enough storage, with staff using microwaves and a small convection hob to cook food for the homeless.

Amy, who lives in the town centre, said she had applied to TV show DIY SOS several times before she finally decided to do the work herself.

She said: “It could do with a bit of updating and so I just decided to attempt to do the kitchen myself. They are just struggling a bit because the kitchen isn’t adequate. I thought it would be good for them to have something a bit nicer.

“I know they have had to turn away offers of food donations from shops because the kitchen isn’t able to cope.”

Generous residents have already donated kitchen cupboards and an oven, with some workmen volunteering their time to help fit the set.

But 27-year-old Amy said they are still in need of an electrician to help fix the wiring and kitchen items such as tiles.

She said: “We want to keep the new room tidy so it wears well. We want to make it easier for the volunteers and the people who use it.

“I can’t imagine how many cups of tea they make in there every day. If they had a good oven they could put proper meals on. But the charity has not got the funds to start playing DIY.

“I think a full home kitchen will be good for the centre because to the users and the volunteers, it is their home.”

Amy, whose mum Susan volunteers at the centre, said she is determined to help: “If there’s any way I can help them out, I will. It’s something that’s close to my heart because any of us could get into that position and need the help of the night shelter.”
