A HOWLEY resident is pleading for information to trace the man who his granddad saved in a remarkable act of bravery more than 60 years ago.

On September 19 in 1954, Joseph Finn jumped into Sankey Canal to rescue a boy who was in danger of drowning after falling in.

He was subsequently awarded with a certificate of bravery for his courageous feat.

Now, 63 years on, Alan Rankin, from Howley, is hoping to find the man who his granddad saved.

Alan's mum, Anita, was with the hero at the time of the incident but she has struggled to recall many memories from the day.

After sharing his plea on Facebook, Alan has praised residents for their support – although he is still no closer to completing his search.

The 47-year-old said: "The boy he saved is probably in his 70s or so now and we wonder if he has a family.

"It would be fabulous to take my mum to meet him to find out what sort of family set up he has now.

"It would be a wonderful feeling to think that it might not have happened if it was not for my granddad saving his life.

"I was six years old when he died – I was heartbroken when he left.

"I have incredible memories of him, he was a terrific man.

"I have been asking my mum about it after seeing the certificate.

"She was with my granddad when the incident happened but she has drawn a bit of a blank with remembering some of the things.

"I have been made up with the number of people who have been trying to help.

"I want to thank the good people of Warrington.

"To a degree, it has already exploded with interest."

Former Orford resident Joseph, who died in 1976, aged 66, was formerly employed by Tetley's.

And as the family's bid to discover further details about his rescue continue, Alan admits he would have liked to have carried out the search secretly.

He said: "Utopia would have been to find out about his life and where he lives, while keeping it all quiet.

"And then, in the week leading up to Christmas, to have surprised my mum.

"But it would be very nice just to get the chance to meet him – we are curious to find out more."

Anita added: "Maybe finally, at last, we will get some answers."
