POLICE are investigating after a suspected explosive device was found in Risley Prison on Sunday – but it is not being treated as terror-related.
There were no injuries to prisoners or staff following the incident inside the Warrington Road site.
It is understood that parts of the site were put on lockdown.
A Prison Service spokesman said: "There was an incident at HMP Risley on November 12.
"There was no threat to the public or those within the prison.
"The matter has been referred to the police and it would be inappropriate to comment further."
Cheshire Police confirmed enquiries are 'ongoing'.
A spokesman said: "Police were called at 4.05pm on November 12 to reports of a potentially explosive device at HMP Risley, Warrington Road.
"The device was dismantled and it is not believed to be terrorist-related."
