EMERGENCY services were called to a Spar on Warrington Road in Risley this morning, Monday, after two men reportedly tried to blow up a cash machine.
Police were alerted at 4.40am when the store alarm went off.
When they arrived, officers found a fire in the store room and called the fire service.
Engines from Warrington, Birchwood, Lymm and Leigh came and firefighters wore breathing apparatus to tackle the flames.
Police believe two men tried to blow up a cash machine at the shop by setting a gas canister alight.
The suspects did not get away with any money and luckily nobody was reported hurt at the scene.
Police closed the road while firefighters fought the flames for around three hours.
An investigation is now under way and anyone with information should call police on 101 quoting incident number 74 of October 16.
