MORE than 100 residents have had limbs amputated in the last three years because of diabetes according to new figures.

Figures released by charity Diabetes UK show that there were a total of 103 diabetes-related amputations between 2013 and 2016.

That number rose by 23 from 80 amputations in the previous three-year period.

Diabetes UK has released the figures as it launches it Putting Feet First campaign, which aims to encourage people with the condition to look after their feet.

Advice for people with diabetes includes taking off their shoes and socks, checking the temperature of their feet and inspecting their limbs regularly – including their toenails and in between toes.

Stephen Ryan, head of Diabetes UK in the north, said: “Diabetes related amputations devastate lives.

“While it’s positive that the majority of people in the north west are aware that an amputation is a complication of diabetes, it’s very worrying that so many don’t know the dangers posed by foot ulcers.

“That’s why it’s essential that people living with diabetes in the region know how to look after their feet and that they check them daily.

“It’s also crucial that they know to seek urgent medical attention if they notice any problems with their feet – a matter of hours can making the difference between losing and keeping a limb.”
