A REGENERATION project which will see a major outdoor recreation area created on the sites of former collieries near to Burtonwood has moved one step closer to becoming a reality.

Earlier this year, cabinet members from St Helens Council welcomed the completion of an action plan for the Bold Forest Park proposal.

The plan covers areas including a former colliery and agricultural land at Sutton Manor, Clock Face, Bold and Bold Heath.

The proposals involve the development of several linked ‘recreation hubs’ across the forest park area, providing visitor facilities and a base for activities including walking, mountain biking, horse riding, boating, canoeing, fishing and children’s play facilities.

The plans also support the future provision of a dedicated visitor centre at Sutton Manor which would feature a café, car parking and toilet facilities and the potential for events space.

Other aspects of the blueprints focus on recognising the area’s rich heritage and nature conservation with potential for guided activities.

The creation of training schemes to help build and maintain the Forest Park’s infrastructure will also offer employment opportunities.

The formal adoption of the plan by St Helens Council, which was produced in partnership with The Mersey Forest and Bold Parish Council, means the proposal will now be used when deciding on planning decisions in the area.

Earlier this year, the planning inspector issued a report to the local authority to ensure plans are consistent with the national policy.
