A POLICE officer based in Warrington who was the driving force behind an initiative to tackle the supply of new psychoactive substances has been recognised for her work.

PC Kerry Barber was named as police officer of the year at the annual Achieving Cheshire Excellence (ACE) Awards event which honours staff that have gone the extra mile in policing.

A 39-year-old volunteer and trustee of Warrington Street Pastors was also among those who were honoured at Fir Grove Hallmark Hotel in Grappenhall on Friday.

Gregor Stewart, from Old Hall, was presented with the volunteer of the year award after ‘showing the love of God in a non-judgemental sort of way’.

John Britton, chairman of the Warrington Street Pastors, said: “Unlike most volunteers who patrol once a month, Gregor has lead patrols of four people virtually every week.

“He helps revellers, often just teenagers, by giving out water or flip flops to young women who have broken their heels, administering basic first aid or just being a listening ear.”

PCSO Tony Spruce, who set up the Victoria Park Experience (VPX) 10 years to tackle crime in the area, was also recognised for his dedication to the community.

He was named PCSO of the year while PC Paul Jukes, who is based in Warrington, was handed the Working in Partnerships award for his work creating the Complex Youth Scheme which aims to help those who are involved in low-level criminal activity.
