OPTICIANS are warning that many cases of sight loss can be prevented by regular eye tests.

Research by Specsavers and the Royal National Institute of Blind People found that one in five people will lose their vision in their lifetime but at least half of these problems can be avoided.

Women are at a greater risk of losing their sight than men but every day 250 people across the country begin to go blind.

Specsavers in Golden Square is inviting residents to book in for a check up to make sure their eyes are healthy.

Store director Clare Kearns said: "It’s astonishing that so many people are needlessly living with or at risk of sight loss in the UK today.

"Half of all sight loss cases are preventable and a simple eye test can be the first step in prevention.

"Our mission together with RNIB is to transform the nation’s eye health through education, awareness and action. We want to reverse these worrying eye health trends that are putting unnecessary pressure on the health service and placing a massive burden on the public purse."
