THE stories of the ordinary people of Lymm affected by both world wars have proved so popular that there will be a second print run to let more readers enjoy the history.

Lynn Smith and Madge Bennion jointly wrote Lymm at War, World War I and II which was published in 2014.

Now demand has been so high, with readers from across the globe, that there is a second printing.

They said: “When we decided to write this book, we didn’t realise the emotions that we would go through.

“People have been very generous in supplying stories, letters and photos.

“Without this help, we would not have the book that we have now.”

The book not only tells the stories of the young men who went to fight on the battlefields of the First and Second World Wars, but also of the wives, parents and families who were left behind.

Drawn from personal stories and archives and documents, it includes pictures and illustrations from the time as well as poems and recipes.

They said: “In the book, along with the stories of Lymm men such as Henry Brookes, there are recipes from the time such as trench cake.

“When we launched the book, we had two of these cakes that friends had made and we handed it round to people.

“Nobody quite believed how good these wartime recipes were and many wanted to try making it for themselves.”

The book includes many familiar landmarks in the village that will be familiar with people who live there now, including Brookfield House, the old fire station and the war memorial.

It even features the story and pictures of the Home Guard.

“The book is dedicated to all the Lymm men, to those who paid the ultimate price and to those who thankfully came home,” they said.

The book has already been bought by many people in the village and send to friends and relatives around the world.

If you want to get your hands on a copy, they are available at Lymm Electric on Bridgewater Street or at Lymm Library on Davies Way, priced £7.
