A WARRINGTON Hospital staff member has completed a half marathon in memory of his sisters, despite being told never to run again by doctors.

Senior transformation delivery manager Mike Bailey defied medical advice to complete the English Half Marathon at the weekend.

Numerous injuries and surgeries led to Mike being advised not to run again, but he decided to run one last marathon in memory of his sister Lisa.

This November will mark 10 years since Mike lost his sister to cancer.

His run raised funds for a new children’s play area at the hospital as part of Warrington and Halton Hospitals’ Charity’s Making Waves appeal.

Mike said: “I am so grateful for everyone’s support, and raising money for this brilliant cause will be a fitting tribute to Lisa whilst providing much-needed funds for the project.

“Any parent who has had a child spend time on a children’s ward will know how important it is for children to have a positive experience whilst in hospital.

“This project aims to provide accessibility to all paediatric patients offering a bright, colourful and interactive experience.

“I have completed a few distance races over the years, but this was most likely my last half marathon – injuries and surgeries have taken their toll.

“However, the temptation to do one last race for Lisa’s anniversary and the desire to help the project was too great.

“I decided to give it one last go, and knew if I had to walk parts of the course to finish then that’s what I would do.”

Warrington and Halton Hospitals’ Charity’s fundraising manager Helen Higginson paid tribute to Mike’s efforts.

She said: “We are absolutely overwhelmed with the tremendous effort Mike has made to support our ongoing children’s ward appeal.”
