LIFE Is Strange became the sleeper hit of the video games world in 2015.

It was a strange cocktail of ‘choose your own adventure’ style gameplay and time travel powers.

The game’s high school setting also felt authentic and the writers and developers were not afraid to tackle taboo subjects. Somehow all those elements gelled. But, as those who played the original will know, the finality of the events of Life Is Strange made a follow-up seem unlikely.

That is why Colorado studio Deck Nine (taking the reins from original developer Dontnod) have wisely made the decision to make a prequel. The game is broken up into three episodes and this time you play as the combative, punky Chloe who played a key part in the original.

Again exploring the butterfly effect of choices and actions, it explores Chloe’s relationship with schoolmate Rachel Amber, who went missing in the first game, as well as her troubled time at home following the death of her dad.

Minus the time travel aspect, Before The Storm has a similar feel to the original although it is unlikely the story will have the same high stakes.

New is ‘backtalk’ which is essentially a battle of wits you can enter into with people Chloe meets. Again, the game’s excellent art style could give the indie film scene a run for its money.

And this time London ambient band Daughter has been commissioned to make Before The Storm’s music – and it is a perfect fit. The hugely evocative soundtrack really captures what it is like to be young, angry and confused.

Episode one, Awake, is out now.
