BRAZEN thieves have smashed into a cash machine in Culcheth using a stolen JCB this morning.

Detectives remain at the scene outside Sainsbury’s Local on Common Lane following the targeted raid at around 2.30am today, Wednesday.

Thieves left a trail of destruction after causing extensive damage to the building during the strike. 

Officers say the culprits then transferred the machine into an unknown vehicle or vehicles before fleeing from the scene.

Police have confirmed that no arrests have been made at this stage and investigations are ongoing.

It is unknown how much cash was stolen during the raid or if the incident is linked to similar thefts in neighbouring area. More here.

Sgt Alison Howarth said: “Investigations in relation to this incident are in the very early stages and we are pursuing a number of lines of enquiry, including CCTV and forensics.

"We are also working to establishing if this incident is linked to incidents that have occurred in the local area.

“We’ve already spoken to a number of witnesses in relation to the incident and as part of the wider investigation.

"We are keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the incident or seen any suspicious that may inform our investigation at this time.”
