WANT to know what it feels like to live inside the pages of a graphic novel?

Then Telltale’s Batman series is the game for you.

Now in its second ‘season’, the award-winning Californian studio’s interactive story blurs the line between games, comics and even TV shows with its episodic format, twists, cliffhangers and series finales. The Enemy Within follows on from last year’s Batman: The Telltale Series where you play as Bruce Wayne/Batman and make choices that alter the gameplay and outcome accordingly.

With a branching series of choices and consequences, the story is tailored by how you play.

And it is recommended that you complete the original series first as, by transferring your save file over, your actions earlier in the game continue to echo throughout the sequel. The first two-hour episode of The Enemy Within focuses on the return of crime lord The Riddler and Batman’s run ins with Amanda Waller, director of a government organisation known as The Agency.

There are also hints of much more to come from The Joker.

It will be interesting to see how the character unfolds as Batman’s archvillain is not his usual malevolent self in this story – instead simply having an unsettling presence over proceedings.

Some criticize Telltale games due to their stripped back gameplay. This game is no different with its easy puzzles and overly forgiving quick time events.

But this leaves the developers free to concentrate on the compelling story and crisp presentation in the style of an animated series.

There have been a few tweaks since the ‘season one’ though.

During combat you can choose between different fight moves during quick time events – which is fine albeit pointless. And there is also a welcome new dynamic which tells you when your actions and choices have an impact on your relationships with other characters.

n Episode one of The Enemy Within, The Enigma, is out now on all formats. Episode two, The Pact, is out on September 26
