THE roof over the new swimming pool at Great Sankey Hub has finally been installed after builders had to halt the project due to problems with a beam that supported the structure.

The completion marks an important milestone for the scheme, which faced significant setbacks.

When builders began to remove the internal ceiling at the centre they discovered problems with the concrete that supports the roof.

It is believed the faults date back to the 1970s when the building was first constructed.

This forced them to halt work on the swimming pools and install emergency props to make the structure safe.

As a result, the entire pool roof and viewing gallery had to be redesigned with a steel frame to support the beams.

But work is now progressing on the hub and a viewing gallery is also set to be finished soon so visitors can watch over the main pools once the centre opens its doors later this year.

Emma Hutchinson, managing director of LiveWire, said: “The existing leisure centre was built in the 1970s and like any well-used building of its age, had deteriorated over time.

“Since construction work began on this project, it became apparent that additional work was needed to refurbish the existing building in a way which brings it up to the high specification of the new build element of the scheme.

“Additional survey works have been carried out on the remainder of the pool hall to check for other areas of structural failure and I am pleased to say that no other issues have been found.”

Cllr Tony Higgins, executive member for leisure and community at Warrington Borough Council, added: “As with any major construction project, challenges can be unearthed during the building process, which can cause delays in the work schedule.

“However, I am delighted to see that the challenges with the pool roof have been rectified and that the new roof and viewing area will provide such a pleasant experience for both swimmers and spectators.”
