INTELLIGENCE gathered by officers in Warrington helped detectives at the FBI in Los Angeles to rescue a five-year-old boy in America who was allegedly the victim of a campaign of abuse.

Detectives at Cheshire Constabulary launched an investigation after a number of young girls in Warrington received graphic images of a young child being abused over an internet-based application.

After the matter was reported to the police, extensive enquiries were carried out.

Following data analysis, the suspect was traced to America and the authorities in the USA were informed and the evidence was handed over.

It has now been confirmed that the suspect has been arrested in California and a five-year-old was rescued and taken to a safe place.

Sarah Pengelly, chief inspector at Warrington, has praised the courage of the young girls in Warrington who reported the images as well as the efforts of officers including PC Cath Hudson, PC Jayne Drum and DC Gary McClatchey.

She said: "I would urge anyone who receives these types of messages to always come forward and pass the information on to the police so we can investigate and protect other victims."
