TRANSPORT chiefs should be investing in public transport such as a tram route rather than the Western Link according to the town's Green Party.

The consultation into the controversial bypass concludes today, Friday.

And the Greens believe other options to reduce traffic in the town should have been explored.

A spokesman said: "While the Warrington and Halton Green party cautiously welcomes the potential reduction in air-pollution in Warrington town centre offered by the proposed Western Link, we are concerned that this new Mersey crossing route will attract additional traffic flows overall and also that traffic management efforts to stem this will relocate congestion and pollution to residential areas near the terminus of the route.

"On balance, we believe that substantial investments in transport infrastructure within Warrington should be redirected to move the town away from promoting choking dependency on cars and provide prioritised, convenient and cheap at point of use public transport, such as a tram system, instead."
