PLANS to construct an extension at a Stretton school in order to provide a new nursery building have been withdrawn.

On May 26 Warrington Borough Council submitted a planning application proposing the construction of an extension at St Matthew's CE Primary School, on Stretton Road, for use as a nursery.

In February, the Homes and Communities Agency's outline plans to build 180 homes on land, off Pewterspear Green Road, were approved by the authority.

Documents put forward with the application highlighted the anticipated 'requirement' for an increase in the number of nursery and school spaces in the area.

In the design and access statement, planning agent Cassidy & Ashton said the development would provide a 'high quality new building' for staff and children.

It added: "The site is 1.43 hectares in size and consists of school buildings, a car park, playground and playing field.

"New residential development of up to 180 dwellings is planned to the north and east of the site.

"As such, there is expected to be a requirement for an increased number of nursery and school spaces within the area.

"The proposal is for the extension of a building, entirely in proportion with the scale of the existing school.

"There will be no impact upon openness of the green belt or wider area.

"The proposed nursery is positioned adjacent to the existing reception and year one classrooms for ease of access between these early years' classes.

"The school's current garden area and associated external play space will provide a new playground area shared between the nursery and reception class.

"A new lobby will connect the nursery to the reception class."

But last Tuesday it was confirmed that the council withdrew its plans.

The nursery would have accommodated for up to 30 children if plans were approved.
