A CHAMPION disabled strongman has revealed ambitions to compete at the 2020 Paralympics in Japan.

Bradley Gleave from Great Sankey was crowned the UK’s strongest man with cerebral palsy in May last year.

But now he is hoping to compete in para-cycling at the Paralympics in Tokyo in three years’ time.

The 23-year-old said: “I am raising the bar and have stepped away from strongman competitions.

“I started wheelchair racing in October last year and enjoyed it so much that I was told by the British Cycling Association that, with the right support and training, I could have the potential to compete at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo in 2020 – or in future games, but 2020 is my aim.

“I was invited down to my first trial in December last year at the Manchester Velodrome, where we had to get put through some tests to measure our power and endurance – it really pushed me to the edge, that much so I nearly threw up.

“Dr John Lenton, the British cycling pathway manager, told me that the score I got was of someone they expected to have been in the sport for a while, and they would really like to see me again.

“I was over the moon.”

Former Penketh High School pupil Bradley needs to raise more than £8,000 for a carbon fibre bike in order to pursue his dream of competing at the Paralympics.

He added: “It isn’t cheap, so at the start you need help from people around you.

“I believe there are no limitations to the world – you can either sit on your backside and give up or you can choose to push forward, but it’s only you who can do that.

“You only get one life – you have to follow your dreams.

“Anything is possible, it just depends on how much you want it and what you’re willing to do to get there.

“We are not disabled – we are differently abled and I want to show the people of Warrington and the world what happens when you don’t give up.”
