WITH all the talk about the new Western Link road (Warrington Guardian, July 13), I wonder if along the line we are rather missing the elephant in room.

Or perhaps that should be two elephants.

Firstly, this town centre bypass is supposed to be the answer to Warrington’s traffic woes.

And anyone trying to get through town at rush hour will know how badly that is needed.

But if this bypass has another aim, namely to provide lots of housing to meet the needs in the local plan released a couple of weeks ago, then is it not just causing more problems than the one it seeks to solve?

Secondly, is the money in place for these works?

There is a £100 million-plus gap in finances between the cost of the cheapest and most expensive schemes.

Where is the Government commitment to this?

They have already been paying for the work on the new Mersey Gateway bridge and the cost of that is being partly met by Warrington drivers following the u-turn earlier this year.

I just worry we are getting everyone very excited over a scheme which might yet fail to get off the ground.
