IN what will be her final championships as a junior athlete, Lymm’s Harriet Knowles-Jones gets her European under 20s Championships campaign underway tomorrow.

Warrington Athletics Club’s middle-distance star is in Grosseto, Italy, representing Great Britain and has been entered into the 1500m race.

Knowles-Jones, 19, will run in the first heat at 9.30am UK time on Friday.

Should she do enough to progress, the final is scheduled to take place at 4.30pm UK time on Sunday.

She is in good form over the distance after twice lowering her personal and season’s best 1500m time at the British Team Trials in Birmingham on July 5, eventually setting a mark of 4mins 14.95secs.

This will increase Knowles-Jones’ hopes of a medal as only two athletes in the field, GB teammate Jemma Reekie and Belgium’s Justine Tinck, have recorded faster times this season.

Knowles-Jones is fresh from representing Great Britain’s senior squad for the first time, finishing ninth in the 3000m at the European Team Athletics Championships last month.
