MORE than 250 drivers face lengthy driving bans and fines after drinking alcohol or taking illegal drugs before getting behind the wheel of a car.

In a bid to reduce the number of motorists driving on the roads while under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs, officers from the Cheshire Roads Policing Unit took to the streets across the country in June.

The number of arrests for drink and drug driving has risen from 214 in June 2016 to 252 arrests during the same time this year.

More than half of those arrested were suspected of driving under the influence of illegal drugs – a significant increase from the 73 arrests made the previous year.

A total of 38 arrests took place in Warrington.

Police and crime commissioner for Cheshire David Keane said: “The consequences of drink and drug driving can be devastating, resulting in shattering ramifications for not only the driver of the vehicle, but innocent members of the public.”

Supt Martin Cleworth added: “All of those arrested as part of this operation will now have to face the consequences of their actions, which will have a significant impact on both their personal and professional lives.”

While the operation has now concluded, Supt Cleworth added: “Our commitment to removing dangerous drivers from the streets continues.

“I urge people to help us by coming forward to report anyone they believe may be under the influence.

“Together we can help make the country’s roads safer for everyone.”
