THE victim of a robbery at Sankey Valley Park feared for her life as she was threatened with a gun and screwdriver.

Becky Welsby, 25, had been searching for her friend's ex-partner, who had been reported as missing, when the ordeal unfolded on July 1 at 1.15am.

Becky, who lives in Lowton, had parked up in the Waterways Car Park along with a friend after receiving a tip-off that the missing man could be in the area.

After a search of Sankey Valley Park, Becky and her friend decided to wait inside the car for the police to arrive.

"I decided to have a cigarette so I put down my window," she said.

"I could see someone walking across but before I could put my window up he was up against the car.

"He asked for a cigarette lighter and I remember saying 'let me find one'.

"I turned around in the seat but when I turned back he had a screwdriver pointing at my chest and a gun or some kind of firearm in the other hand."

The man, who became agitated and started to shout, made several threats to the women who handed over their loose change.

"I just froze for a couple of seconds," said Becky.

"So much runs through your head at the time and it all happened so fast.

"It was scary as I felt so out of control.

"At first I was terrified but now I am angry.

"No-one should be made to feel like this."

The man fled in the direction of the Peace Centre when the police arrived.

Within minutes a police helicopter was deployed and sniffer dogs and their handlers were called to the scene.

The suspect is described as white, approximately 5ft 7ins, 22 to 30 and of medium build.

He was wearing a dark jacket, trousers, trainers and a black baseball cap.

Police have confirmed no arrests have been made but enquiries are ongoing.

It is not yet known if the weapon was real or imitation.
