A LICENSING application to host a music event at Victoria Park has been submitted to the council for consideration.

According to a public notice, S.J.M LTD has requested a seasonal premises licence for May, June, July, August and September.

If the application is approved it would allow the sale of alcohol at the Knutsford Road site as well as live entertainment.

While the request is for a five-month period, a council spokesman said the licence will be used for an event which would take place over two days during the May bank holiday weekend next year.

There would be a capacity of 20,000 concert goers per day and the event would finish at 11pm each night.

A council spokesman added there would be no camping on site.

The event is seen as further proof of a change in Warrington's cultural offering and a direct outcome of the bid for Warrington to become City of Culture in 2021.

But this has not been confirmed by S.J.M LTD who declined to comment.

Previous musical events at Victoria Park include the launch of V Festival in August 1996 and a Radiohead concert in 2000.

The application will be heard by the council’s licensing committee later in the year.

But concerns have already been raised by Members of the Latchford-based Victoria Park Residents' Association (VIPRA).

Mike Miller, of Park Avenue, Latchford, said: "Even if it is only a two-day event it will still bring a lot of disruption to residents in the area.

"I don't believe it is the right area given the density of housing.

"Some people work from home and if you have no sleep for days this could affect your work as well.

"I know people who live near Creamfields and they are paid to go on holiday – we won't be getting the same treatment."

Mr Miller also raised fears the company could 'take advantage' of the five-month licence period.

A petition has been set up to 'protect Victoria Park' according to campaigners.

A spokesman said: "Victoria Park Warrington is located in the ward of Latchford West that contains about 7,000 residents in mainly high density housing.

"In addition the park is surrounded by other areas containing equally high density housing.

"We value Victoria Park as a priceless recreational resource that needs to be kept safe and peaceful for pensioners, children, dog walkers and all residents alike."
