TRAIN passengers in Warrington could now save more than £50 on tickets bought up to an hour before their journey to London thanks to a new scheme.

Customers will be able to buy an advance fare and even reserve a seat on the day of travel under plans announced by Virgin Trains.

In the past advance tickets have only been available up to 11.59pm on the day before the train departs but customers can now buy them the same day they plan to travel.

The company said the move could save passengers travelling from Warrington Bank Quay station up to £2million a year.

For example, an advance fare bought on the day for travel between Warrington Bank Quay and London could cost £40, saving customers 52% on the price of an off-peak single (£82.90).

Kerry Riley, customer experience manager on Virgin Trains' west coast line, said: “Customers can book advance tickets up to six months before travel on weekdays and three months on weekends, and this is still the best way to get the very cheapest fares.

"But we know some journeys are last minute and that’s why we’re introducing advance fares that will be available on the day.

"Customers will not only get the cheapest possible fare, but they will also be able to reserve a seat for their journey, meaning they can make the most of their time on board whether that’s relaxing or working.”

Advance tickets can only be purchased if they are available.

Virgin Trains confirmed that it will take part in a single-leg pricing trial with the Government earlier this year which will aim to provide cheaper fares.
