MORE than 100 treatments including cosmetic surgeries may no longer be funded on the NHS for some residents under new plans.

A number of procedures are under review by NHS Warrington Clinical Commissioning Group.

The first phase of treatments revealed to be under review include cosmetic surgeries such as nose jobs, face and brow lifts, breast reductions and augmentations, tummy tucks, the removal of breast implants and surgery to remove moles and freckles.

Other procedures under review include cataract treatments, haemorrhoidectomies, hair-loss cures, laser tattoo removals, surgical scar reductions and penile implants.

None of the procedures under review will be stopped completely, but fewer patients may now meet the criteria for which they can receive the treatments.

Dr Dan Bunstone, GP at Chapelford Medical Centre and CCG chair, said: “The quality of care given to patients is the most important factor in reviewing these policies.

“At the moment, the criteria for access to the procedures in the review vary between areas.

“This can result in inconsistency in which procedures patients are offered dependent upon where they live.

“We believe that by having a more standardised set of policies, we can deliver a more equitable service for patients across the region.”

The CCG is working with its counterparts in Halton, St Helens, Knowsley, Liverpool, South Sefton and Southport and Formby to draw up the policies.

Dr Bunstone added: “By working together with fellow CCGs, we can also make sure that out NHS resources are being spent in the best way, looking at how the latest medical advice can result in the most appropriate treatment and outcomes for our patients.”
