THERE are “plenty of twists and turns” to come in the battle to avoid the Middle 8s, Wolves boss Tony Smith says.

With four games to go until the competition splits, The Wire sit ninth in Super League, three points adrift of eighth-placed Wigan.

Wolves have a more favourable run-in, with their final three games coming against sides also in the fight for a top-eight spot, including a crucial trip to Wigan on July 13.

Before that, Smith’s men travel to fifth-placed Wakefield on Saturday and the Wolves boss says their focus is solely on the Belle Vue clash.

“We’re ticking them off, we’ll worry about ticking off Wakefield left,” he said.

“By the end of the rounds, we’ll be where we deserve to be.

“There will be more twists and turns yet. There will be shocks and upsets here and there.

“All we can do is focus on who we’re playing, this week we did that pretty well.”

The Wire kept their hopes of avoiding a scrap for survival alive by beating fellow strugglers Catalans Dragons on Saturday.

The 24-16 victory ended a run of six games without a victory for Warrington in what was a much better performance from the men in primrose and blue.

Wolves looked more cohesive in attack than in recent weeks with some extravagant plays and breaks, something Smith wants to see more of if possible.

However, the Wire boss recognised there will also be a need to “keep it simple” at times.

“We like flashy stuff if we can do it but we’ve got to keep it pretty simple,” he said.

“I don’t think a lot of our errors have come because of overplaying or trying to be too flashy, they’ve just been basic errors around the play-the-ball or going into contact on first or second tackles.

“I thought we concentrated a bit better in that respect today, hung in there for each other and worked hard for each other.”
