DISABLED children will no longer have to watch from the sidelines as their friends spin on the roundabout or rush to the swings at the playground.

Thanks to an innovative project a new accessible play area has been built on Liverpool Road recreation ground.

The council worked with Warrington Disability Partnership and The BAM Project to bring the £90,000 playground to life and it has now opened to youngsters.

The Bam Project which aims to raise awareness of the lack of facilities for children with disabilities and trustee Chantelle Hurley said: “As a team, we are so pleased with the results on the Liverpool Road park.

“We feel so privileged to have worked in partnership with some amazing people, that not only see our goals and believe in us at Team Bam, but bring these goals forward and turn them into a reality

“The future for families with multiple needs is going to be a bright one, especially where our local parks are concerned. ‘Play for all’ is our motto and that’s our main goal. Being a part of the process at Liverpool Road has been brilliant we have enjoyed every minute.”

Special equipment has been installed, including an outdoor gym, so that all residents can enjoy the park.

Executive board member for leisure and community, Cllr Tony Higgins, joined pupils from Evelyn Street Primary School and representatives from Warrington Disability Partnership and The Bam Project to celebrate the completion of the project.

He said: “What makes this play area extra special is that it has been designed to break down barriers to play and to be accessible to the widest possible range of young people.

“I’m delighted that this project has been completed – just in time for the summer months - and I look forward to it bringing a great deal of happiness to local children and their families for many years to come.”

The playground was funded by a £50,000 grant from WREN’s FCC Community Action Fund, with the council contributing a further £40,000 to the project.
