FRIDAY sees the return of one of the most important days in the town’s annual calendar – Warrington Walking Day.
So to make the occasion, this week on Yester Years we look back in our archives to picture of a walking day from time gone by.
This cover photograph from 1958 shows the St James Own Cubs taking part in the procession, led by S Hinde, the cub mistress.
The history of walking day dates back to the 19th century.
It started in the 1830s when the church set it up as a riposte to the debauchery of the Newton races.
There were originally different routes for the Catholic and Church of England faiths but now all groups walk along the same paths.
