TOWN Hall figures are raising funds for the victims and families affected by the Grenfell Tower fire.

Cllr Tony Higgins, executive board member for leisure and community, has donated a Marks & Spencer food hamper to the Town Hall to help raise money.

It will be raffled off, with all funds going to the British Red Cross, which launched an appeal to support people affected by the disaster at the London tower block in the early hours last Wednesday.

More than £140 has been raised so far.

Cllr Higgins (LAB – Fairfield and Howley) said: "Everyone is playing their part in raising money for the British Red Cross – councillors, officers and Town Hall staff.

"Community is only strong when we work together and support each other, so when we witness tragedies, such as the Grenfell Tower disaster, it's important that as a society we do all that is possible to help.

"My brother attended the area after the fire as he's a police officer in London's Metropolitan Police and was obviously upset.

"I was lucky enough to win the hamper last week so I have chosen to raffle it off to my colleagues and officers at the Town Hall before donating proceeds to the British Red Cross."

The fire has killed at least 79 people.
